Insurance is where a lot of agents first learn to buy leads — and where a lot of them get frustrated. The market moved on from the old days of cold-calling a list; today’s consumers shop online, compare quotes, and expect a fast response. That’s good news for agents who buy well and brutal for those who don’t. This is a field guide to buying insurance leads across the four biggest lines, and how each one differs.
What’s true across every insurance line
Before the specifics, the fundamentals that never change:
- Speed wins. Insurance leads are frequently semi-exclusive — the consumer is comparing quotes. The agent who calls first, while intent is hot, usually wins the policy. Real-time delivery isn’t optional here.
- Know your exclusivity. Ask exactly how many agents receive each lead. “Shared, capped at three” is a very different product than “shared, no cap.”
- Filter by geography and licensing. You can only write where you’re appointed and licensed. Zip and state filtering is non-negotiable.
- Consent matters. With phone and text outreach heavily regulated, insist on TrustedForm or Jornaya certificates on every lead.
Get those right and you’re already ahead of most of the floor. Now the line-by-line.
Auto insurance leads
Auto is the highest-volume, most competitive insurance line — which cuts both ways. There’s endless volume, but consumers are quote-shopping hard, so speed and script matter enormously.
- What consumers want: a lower rate, fast. Many are triggered by a renewal increase or a life event (new car, new state).
- How to win: call within minutes, lead with a concrete quote, and be ready to bundle. Filter by state, coverage type, and vehicle where you can.
- Buyer’s note: because volume is high and competition fierce, auto is where speed-to-lead separates profitable agents from the rest.
Home insurance leads
Buying a home is one of the biggest financial moves a consumer makes, and it comes with a natural insurance trigger — the closing. Home leads tend to be higher-value and stickier once written.
- What consumers want: coverage tied to a purchase or refinance, often on a deadline set by their lender.
- How to win: move on the timeline. These consumers frequently need a policy by a specific date, so responsiveness closes deals. Bundling with auto is a strong play.
- Buyer’s note: filter by homeownership status and property details; a renter in a home-insurance file is wasted spend.
Health insurance leads
Health is a large, perennially active market — millions of consumers are uninsured or shopping for better coverage at any given time. It’s also the most seasonally and regulation-driven of the four.
- What consumers want: affordable coverage, clarity on subsidies and eligibility, and help navigating a confusing system.
- How to win: know the enrollment calendar, qualify quickly on eligibility, and be genuinely helpful — health shoppers reward agents who reduce confusion.
- Buyer’s note: filter for eligibility factors so you’re not spending calls on consumers who don’t fit the plans you sell.
Life insurance leads
Life divides into term and final-expense buyers, and the two behave differently. Life is a relationship sale — trust does a lot of the closing.
- What consumers want: protection for their family (term) or to cover end-of-life costs (final expense). The motivation is emotional as much as financial.
- How to win: lead with empathy, qualify on age and coverage need, and don’t rush the human part of the conversation.
- Buyer’s note: term and final-expense are different products with different economics — buy leads that match what you actually sell, and filter by age band accordingly.
Putting the field guide to work
Across all four lines, the winning pattern is the same shape: buy fresh, filtered, consented leads; call fast; match the product to the consumer’s real need. What changes is the trigger, the timeline, and the emotional register of the conversation.
If you write more than one line, a blend of exclusive leads for your highest-value products and semi-exclusive volume for the competitive lines usually pencils out best. Tell us which lines you write and we’ll put together a mix — and the delivery speed — to match.
